RFHR 2-D PAGE overcame weaknesses in the original Kaltschmidt and Wittmann method, eliminating spot pattern noise and achieving high-resolution separation of low molecular weight proteins. The method enabled the discovery of new ribosomal proteins bL35 and bL36, intact bL31, and identification of all ribosomal proteins corresponding to the E. coli genome. Analysis of total proteins in E. coli cells using the RFHR method revealed 65 spots exhibiting changes in protein content in the stationary phase.
