Description
Geoscience Australia investigated the frontier Capel and Faust basins, which lie at depths of 1300-2500 meters, as part of government energy security programs. High-resolution 2D seismic, gravity, magnetic, and multibeam bathymetry data were acquired in 2006-2007 and synthesized to derive geological models. This work contributed to understanding basin structure, tectonic reactivation, and potential fluid migration pathways in the northern Lord Howe Rise.
Use Cases
Modeling basin architecture and tectonic history based on integrated 2D/3D seismic and geophysical data.
Identifying potential fluid migration pathways based on the described relationship between surface and subsurface geology.
Informing marine bioregional planning based on the analysis of seafloor features mentioned in the description.
Studying Cretaceous rifting and early Cenozoic subsidence events in the east Gondwana margin.
Strengths
Data integrates multiple high-resolution geophysical surveys (2D seismic, gravity, magnetic, multibeam bathymetry) from a defined 2006-2007 acquisition period.
Analysis contributed to specific geological insights, including basin structure, tectonic reactivation, and fluid migration pathways.
Dataset is associated with a defined government research program (Australian Government's New Oil and Energy Security programs).
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count and dataset scale are unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Primary file formats are PDF and HTML, which may require extraction or conversion for computational analysis.
