More than 12,000 square kilometres of southwestern Yukon are covered by this bulletin describing surficial geology and Quaternary history. The Government of Yukon produced this work to fill a significant gap in knowledge of central Yukon glacial limits and landscape impacts from the Cordilleran Ice Sheet. Hundreds of soil pits were hand excavated during the program, with detailed descriptions provided in the bulletin and maps.
Use Cases
- Improving sampling for exploration geochemistry programs based on surficial geology knowledge.
- Assisting in placer exploration based on described landforms and sediments.
- Providing a framework for assessing terrain hazards like permafrost and landslides for future development.
- Supporting land use planning by understanding controls on biogeography and habitat from soils.
Strengths
- Covers an area of more than 12,000 square kilometres.
- Includes detailed descriptions from hundreds of hand-excavated soil pits.
- Addresses a significant gap in knowledge of glacial limits in central Yukon.
Limitations
- Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
- Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
- Data may reflect geographic bias inherent to open_canada.
