Description
Over 195 compiled surficial geology maps provide approximately 80% coverage of Yukon territory. The data includes polygon attributes for surficial material and texture, line features for glacial landforms, and point features for permafrost characteristics. These standardized GIS datasets are compiled by the Yukon Geological Survey from maps produced by various agencies including the Geological Survey of Canada.
Use Cases
Classify landforms using polygon attributes like surficial material and texture for geotechnical engineering assessments
Map permafrost distribution by analyzing point features such as pingos, palsas, and thermokarst depressions
Identify glacial history and processes from line features including eskers, moraines, and meltwater channels
Support mineral exploration by correlating surficial material attributes with known geological contacts and lineaments
Strengths
Compilation of over 195 individual maps ensures broad spatial representation
Approximately 80% coverage of Yukon territory provides extensive geographic scope
Standardized attributes using the Yukon terrain classification system improve interoperability
Includes polygon, line, and point feature types capturing material, landforms, and processes
Limitations
Spatial overlap between map scales ranging from 1:250,000 to 1:10,000 may create data redundancy or conflicts
Produced by various agencies over time, potentially introducing inconsistencies in original mapping methods
