Cefas conducted this survey as part of the English Channel Beam Trawl Survey (VIId and IVc), Qtr 3 (FSS: BTS7D). It includes station, catch, length, and biological data for 72 species, plus benthic, litter, temperature, salinity, and acoustic data collected from 162 stations between July 24 and August 7, 2000. The survey was performed aboard the Corystes using a 4m beam trawl and other benthic sampling gear in support of EU data regulations and an ICES research program.
Use Cases
- Assessing fish stock health and population dynamics based on catch and length data for 72 species.
- Studying benthic community composition and habitat impact based on grab and beam trawl sampling.
- Analyzing correlations between species presence and environmental factors like water temperature and salinity.
- Monitoring marine litter distribution as part of the survey's additional data collection aims.
- Validating acoustic survey methods against physical catch data from the same stations.
Strengths
- Survey operations were undertaken on 162 stations, providing a substantial spatial sample.
- 72 different species were caught, indicating broad taxonomic coverage.
- Data collection includes multiple modalities: biological catch, length, benthic samples, litter, temperature, salinity, and acoustics.
Limitations
- Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
- Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment for large-scale modeling.
- Data may reflect temporal and geographic bias inherent to a single survey in July-August 2000 in the Southern North Sea and Eastern English Channel.
