A novel flow-cytometric method detects yeast cells in blood cultures in just over 1 hour, compared to days for culture-based methods. The study investigated the performance of two fluorescent markers across 6 different yeast species in spiked blood cultures and validated the gating strategy using imaging cytometry. The limit of detection was 2.871 × 10³ cells/mL in spiked cultures, and the assay successfully detected yeast in clinical blood cultures.
