Description
A cohort of healthy adults was analyzed for associations between blood DNA methylation at approximately 730,000 CpG sites and three physical fitness indicators: estimated VO₂max, grip strength, and vertical jump height. The dataset contains results from epigenome-wide association analyses adjusted for age, sex, and blood cell composition, authored by Ferenc Torma and last updated in April 2026. No significant single-CpG associations were found, but differential methylation was identified when participants were stratified by VO₂max norms.
Use Cases
Identify subtle epigenetic markers associated with cardiorespiratory fitness based on VO₂max stratification.
Investigate differential methylation regions (DMRs) related to metabolic and inflammatory pathways.
Perform hypothesis-generating analysis on links between grip strength, vertical jump, and DNA methylation patterns.
Replicate and validate findings on specific CpG sites like cg21308111 (TNFRSF10A) and cg17890932 (USP24) in independent cohorts.
Strengths
Analyzes a high-resolution set of approximately 730,000 CpG sites using the Illumina MethylationEPIC array.
Statistical analyses were adjusted for age, sex, estimated blood cell composition, and multiple testing.
Results include specific differentially methylated CpG sites identified at a false discovery rate (FDR < 0.05).
Limitations
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
The authors note findings are hypothesis-generating and require confirmation in larger, independent cohorts.
