Over 3500 protein-coding genes from the Vibrio cholerae O1 El Tor str. N16961 reference genome are compared across functional annotations from 2000 and 2026. The classification of genes as 'hypothetical protein' dropped from over 40% to ~5.7% over this period, with potential roles identified for ~38.5% of remaining hypotheticals.
