Description
Tanzania's hydrological network is mapped through OpenStreetMap features including rivers, wetlands, and bays, exported by the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT). The collection provides vector data updated as of March 2026 across multiple formats like SHP, KML, and GeoJSON. It captures both natural water bodies and man-made waterway infrastructure.
Use Cases
Hydrological modeling using the waterway and natural tags to distinguish between rivers and wetlands
Infrastructure assessment by identifying obstructed paths via the blockage and tunnel columns
Local language map production utilizing the name:sw and name:en fields
Strengths
Available in five geospatial formats including GARMIN IMG and GeoPackage
Includes localized Swahili toponyms via the name:sw attribute
Captures specific hydrological infrastructure like tunnels and blockages
Limitations
Crowdsourced nature may result in uneven geographic coverage between urban and remote regions
Physical dimension fields like width and depth are often unpopulated
