Description
2347 X-ray sources were detected in the XMM-Newton Extended Survey of the Taurus Molecular Cloud (XEST), covering approximately 5 square degrees. The catalog, created by NASA HEASARC in July 2007, provides coordinates, count rates, and hardness ratios, achieving an 85-98% detection rate for T Tauri stars. This survey is about an order of magnitude deeper than previous X-ray studies of the region.
Use Cases
Correlating X-ray luminosity with stellar mass based on the described X-ray luminosity vs. mass correlation.
Comparing X-ray activity between classical and weak-line T Tauri stars (CTTS vs. WTTS) based on the evidence for lower luminosities in CTTS.
Identifying potential new members of the Taurus association based on the systematic survey of faint and strongly absorbed objects.
Analyzing the distribution of X-ray-to-bolometric luminosity ratios discussed in the overview paper.
Studying the thermal structure and long-term evolution of hot plasma in a star-forming region.
Strengths
Contains 2347 detected X-ray sources with coordinates, count rates, and hardness ratios.
Surveys the most populated ~5 square degrees of the Taurus Molecular Cloud.
Achieved a high detection rate, identifying 136 out of 169 surveyed stellar systems.
Survey depth is about an order of magnitude greater than previous X-ray surveys of the region.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
The description notes that overlapping survey fields may result in duplicate source entries with different IDs.
