Description
Temperature and salinity profiles were collected from CTD and STD casts in the Southwest Atlantic Ocean, specifically the Drake Passage region, from the R/V Robert D. Conrad between January 1974 and March 1975. The dataset, processed to the NODC F022 standard, contains high-resolution vertical profiles of temperature, salinity, density, and potentially dissolved oxygen or transmissivity, with sampling intervals as fine as 1 meter. It was collected as part of the International Decade of Ocean Exploration's First Dynamic Response and Kinematics Experiment (FDRAKE).
Use Cases
Analyzing vertical water column structure and stratification based on high-resolution temperature and salinity profiles.
Studying ocean circulation and frontal dynamics in the Drake Passage using station position and environmental data.
Calculating derived oceanographic parameters like density (sigma-t) from the provided conductivity, temperature, and depth measurements.
Investigating historical ocean conditions for climate model validation during the 1974-1975 time period.
Strengths
High-resolution vertical sampling, with data potentially reported at depth intervals as fine as 1 meter.
Clear provenance from a major research institution (Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory) and a defined scientific program (IDOE/ISOS/FDRAKE).
Data processed to a documented, standard archival format (NODC F022).
Limitations
Critical metadata is missing from platform listings, including row count, file size, specific column names, and license information.
Conflicting 'last updated' dates between sources (1975 vs. 2026) create uncertainty about metadata maintenance.
The primary data is described as 'analog' and requires contacting the data center, indicating potential access barriers.
Provenance
Source
Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory; processed by the National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC).
Collection Method
Collected via Conductivity-Temperature-Depth (CTD) and Salinity-Temperature-Depth (STD) instrument casts from the R/V Robert D. Conrad.
Time Range
1974-01-06 to 1975-03-06
Freshness
Metadata was last updated on 2026-04-01 according to one source, but the data collection ended in 1975.
Analog data are available by contacting NODC user services. The digital dataset conforms to the NODC F022 format, whose full description is available online.
