Description
Two research cruises in April-June 1995 collected water column microstructure data using a free-fall EPSONDE profiler at two anchored stations on Georges Bank. The profiler measured temperature microstructure, velocity microstructure, depth, temperature, and conductivity, yielding derived metrics for turbulent kinetic energy dissipation, temperature variance dissipation, and turbulent diffusivity. The data was collected by SCIOPS from the R/V Seward Johnson.
Use Cases
Modeling turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rates based on velocity microstructure measurements.
Analyzing turbulent diffusivity and mixing processes based on derived temperature and conductivity data.
Studying temporal variability of ocean microstructure over day-long periods at fixed stations.
Validating regional oceanographic models for the Georges Bank ecosystem based on in-situ turbulence profiles.
Strengths
Data collected during two dedicated cruises over a focused time period (April-June 1995).
Profiling performed at two distinct, anchored stations (Shallow and Deep) for periods of a day or more.
Measurements yield derived physical quantities like dissipation rates and turbulent diffusivity.
