Description
NCEI Accession 0123079 contains oceanographic data collected by 10 institutions in support of the Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS) Program. The dataset includes 24,721 temperature profiles and 24,718 salinity profiles from 25 gliders deployed in the Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, and Lake Michigan. Data were collected between October 6, -2012 and September 17, -2015.
Use Cases
Modeling ocean heat content based on temperature profile data
Analyzing water mass distribution based on salinity measurements
Studying ocean currents based on speed and direction data
Calibrating satellite sea surface salinity measurements with in-situ glider data
Strengths
24,721 temperature profiles and 24,718 salinity profiles provide substantial observational density
Data collected from 25 gliders across multiple ocean basins and a large lake
Multi-institutional collection involving 10 organizations under the IOOS program
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download
