Description
NODC Accession 0116409 contains discrete sample and profile data from the RV FRANKLIN cruise PACIFICA_09FA19930624, collected as part of the International CLIVAR Global Ocean Carbon and Repeat Hydrography Program. The dataset includes measurements of dissolved oxygen, hydrostatic pressure, nitrate, phosphate, salinity, silicate, and water temperature from the Coral Sea and Tasman Sea. These data support the systematic re-occupation of WOCE/JGOFS hydrographic sections to quantify changes in ocean heat, freshwater, and carbon storage.
Use Cases
Analyzing vertical profiles of water temperature and salinity to study ocean stratification and water mass distribution.
Quantifying nutrient concentrations (nitrate, phosphate, silicate) to assess biogeochemical cycles and primary productivity.
Calibrating and validating ocean circulation or carbon cycle models using in-situ CTD and bottle data.
Investigating long-term changes in ocean carbon storage by comparing this 1993 occupation with modern repeat hydrography sections.
Strengths
Data collected as part of a major international climate research program (CLIVAR/WOCE), ensuring standardized collection protocols.
Includes multiple core oceanographic variables (7 listed) from two instrument types (CTD and bottle), allowing for cross-validation.
Covers a specific, well-defined cruise track and time period (1993-06-24 to 1993-07-17) in the Coral and Tasman Seas.
Limitations
Key metadata is missing or conflicting: the principal investigator is listed as both CSIRO and UNSW CCRC, and row counts, column names, and license information are absent.
The dataset's freshness is unclear due to conflicting 'last updated' dates (1993-07-17 and 2026-03-06) across platforms.
The available file format (HTML) suggests the primary data may not be in an immediately analyzable tabular format, requiring extraction.
