Description
From October 14 to November 27, 1993, the SHOYO research vessel collected discrete sample and profile data in the North Pacific Ocean as part of the PACIFICA and WOCE P02E projects. The dataset includes measurements of dissolved oxygen, nitrate+nitrite, phosphate, silicate, salinity, water temperature, potential temperature, and hydrostatic pressure. Data were gathered using CTD and bottle instruments, coordinated by the Japan Oceanographic Data Center.
Use Cases
Analyzing vertical profiles of nutrients (nitrate+nitrite, phosphate, silicate) to study biological productivity.
Investigating water mass properties and circulation using concurrent measurements of salinity, temperature, and potential temperature (theta).
Calibrating or validating ocean carbon cycle models with in-situ chemical and physical data from a defined cruise track.
Assessing dissolved oxygen levels in relation to hydrostatic pressure and temperature for ocean health studies.
Strengths
Data is associated with two major international oceanographic programs: the World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) P02E line and the PACIFICA project.
Covers a specific, well-documented time range (1993-10-14 to 1993-11-27) and geographic area (North Pacific Ocean).
Includes a coherent set of core physical and chemical oceanographic variables measured with standard instruments (CTD and bottle).
Limitations
Critical metadata is missing or conflicting: the data collector is listed as both 'Japan Oceanographic Data Center' and 'Maritime Safety Agency'.
No column names, row counts, or file sizes are provided, limiting understanding of the data's structure and scale.
The most recent update date (2026-03-05) on one platform conflicts with the inherent age of the data (1993), suggesting metadata management inconsistencies.
Provenance
Source
Japan Oceanographic Data Center / Maritime Safety Agency (conflict noted)
Collection Method
Discrete sample and profile observations collected using CTD and bottle instruments from the R/V SHOYO.
