The Acidic Precipitation in Ontario Study (A.P.I.O.S.) was established in 1979 by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment. Its principal objective is to establish a uniform soil chemistry data base across the province to identify future trends and map soil sensitivity to acidic deposition. The study investigates effects such as reduced soil pH, leaching of nutrients like magnesium and calcium, and mobilization of metals like aluminum.
