Description
Geoscience Australia Cruise 270 data from the 2004 R.V. Southern Surveyor expedition to the Kenn Plateau off northeast Australia. The dataset includes multibeam-sonar swath-bathymetry, 3090 km of multichannel seismic and magnetic data, and twelve dredge hauls of sedimentary rocks. It documents the plateau's complex structure of thinned continental crust, rift basins, and volcanic edifices.
Use Cases
Modeling tectonic evolution based on described fracture zones and rotation history.
Analyzing sediment deposition and stratigraphy based on described Cretaceous to Recent sequences.
Mapping seafloor bathymetry and basement structures using the multibeam and seismic data mentioned.
Studying volcanic hotspot chain development referenced in the Tasmantid and Lord Howe chain descriptions.
Strengths
Includes 3090 km of multichannel seismic data and continuous multibeam-sonar swath-bathymetry.
Contains physical samples from twelve dredge hauls, with some dated micropaleontologically.
Covers a large area of approximately 140,000 square kilometers of thinned continental crust.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Data is provided in PDF and HTML formats, which may require extraction for computational analysis.
