Large barchan-shaped sand deposits in the northwest Torres Strait exhibit characteristics of both subaerial dunes and subaqueous sand banks. Satellite imagery indicates these deposits migrate 10-15 meters west per year and shed sediment from their horns. The data is provided by the Australian Ocean Data Network and was last updated in June 2026.
