Description
The project San Telmo dataset contains results from a 1994 archaeological and historical investigation focused on the Spanish warship San Telmo, lost in 1819 with 644 persons aboard. The project, conducted by SCIOPS, located five temporal sites of Antarctic trappers dated 1819-1825, excavated three, and collected 215 wood samples for analysis. It also conducted geophysical surveys, plotting the coast with differential GPS and identifying potential shipwreck anomalies.
Use Cases
Analyzing early Antarctic human presence based on the location and excavation of five trapper sites.
Identifying potential shipwreck locations based on magnetometer anomalies and hydrographic data.
Studying wood preservation in cold climates using the collection of 215 ancient wood samples.
Mapping historical Antarctic coastal navigation hazards based on the differential GPS-plotted coastline.
Strengths
Contains specific archaeological results, including 215 wood samples and five located trapper sites.
Includes multiple data types: terrestrial and sub-aquatic survey data, GPS mapping, and material artifacts.
Focuses on a historically significant event, the 1819 loss of the San Telmo with 644 persons.
