Description
September 2014 to January 2017 marine surveys collected Side Scan Sonar, Synthetic Aperture Sonar, and multibeam sonar backscatter data at 5-meter resolution. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau led the search operations for missing flight MH370 in the Southern Indian Ocean, with support from Geoscience Australia and the governments of Australia, Malaysia, and China. Data was acquired using Kongsberg AUV Hugin 1000, Edgetech 2400, and SLH PS-60 sonar systems deployed from vessels including Fugro Supporter and Go Phoenix.
Use Cases
Generate high-resolution seafloor topography maps based on the 5 m resolution sonar backscatter data.
Analyze underwater search patterns and navigation data based on the described marine survey operations.
Train or test computer vision models for object detection in sonar imagery based on the Side Scan Sonar and Synthetic Aperture Sonar data.
Conduct comparative analysis of different sonar technologies (SSS, SAS, multibeam) based on the multi-sensor dataset.
Strengths
Data was collected over a multi-year period from September 2014 to January 2017.
Provides 5-meter resolution imagery from multiple sonar systems (Side Scan Sonar, Synthetic Aperture Sonar, multibeam).
Surveys were conducted by a multi-national collaboration involving Australia, Malaysia, and China.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count and file size are unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
