Description
140 sediment samples from the Hawkesbury River system in Australia were analyzed for texture, heavy metals, organochlorine pesticides, and nutrients. The dataset, provided by Geoscience Australia Data, reflects environmental impacts from land use, urbanization, and sewage discharge. Sediment analysis provides a long-term integrated assessment of contaminant sources and dispersion in this large coastal catchment.
Use Cases
Assess spatial patterns of heavy metal contamination based on sediment sample locations from Windsor to Broken Bay.
Correlate sediment nutrient levels with potential sources like sewage treatment plants mentioned in the description.
Evaluate the environmental impact of specific land uses, such as marinas and urban development, based on contaminant concentrations.
Model the potential bioavailability and mobility of toxicants in upper river reaches as described in the analysis.
Strengths
Analysis of 140 sediment samples provides a substantial spatial coverage of the river system.
