David Winter's research at the University of Michigan uses content analysis of speeches and interviews to measure the achievement, affiliation, and power motives of U.S. presidents and other leaders. The work demonstrates methods for objective and reliable personality assessment at a distance. It concludes that personality is complex, exists in social contexts, and can predict political behaviors in contingent ways.
