Description
The United Kingdom's 2013 report to the European Commission includes an audit trail for 83 terrestrial and 42 marine species in the UK Atlantic region, plus species in Gibraltar. This dataset, produced by the Joint Nature Conservation Committee, contains supporting notes explaining the derivation and caveats for each species report. It was created because the standard EC reporting format lacked space for detailed underlying information sources and reasoning.
Use Cases
Analyzing conservation status assessment methodologies based on the described audit trail parameters
Tracking data sources and reasoning for species reports as referenced in the UK Approach Document
Comparing reporting details across the 147 reported species (83 terrestrial, 42 marine UK, plus Gibraltar)
Strengths
Provides explicit audit trail for 147 reported species, detailing data derivation and caveats
Based on a formal six-year EU reporting cycle under Article 17 of the Habitats Directive
Includes separate data rows for each species and attribute/parameter combination
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment
Data reflects a specific 2013 reporting period and may not reflect current status

Joint Nature Conservation Committee
Collection Method
Collated as supporting notes for the mandatory six-year EU Habitats Directive report.
