Description
Topographic maps referred to as the 'Economics Edition' (AV) were produced by the Bundesamt für Kartographie und Geodäsie to serve as a map basis for administration, science, industry, agriculture, transport, and environmental protection in the former German Democratic Republic. The maps were classified as 'Confidential service item' or 'Only for official use' and depict planimetry, water, relief, streets, construction areas, and forests. The data was last updated in 1980.
Use Cases
Analyze historical land-use patterns based on the described forest, construction, and agricultural areas.
Study the evolution of transport and infrastructure networks based on the road and construction area data.
Model historical environmental protection efforts based on the map's thematic layers for planning.
Compare administrative and economic geography of the former GDR based on the map's intended use for administration and industry.
Strengths
Produced by a national mapping agency (Bundesamt für Kartographie und Geodäsie), suggesting authoritative source data.
