Description
NESP TWQ 5.14 data comprises four spreadsheets of trace metal concentrations measured in waters, benthic and suspended sediments, and seagrasses across the Torres Strait. The dataset, produced by CSIRO and JCU, includes sampling coordinates, physical-chemical parameters, and laboratory quality control data. It is supported by historical seagrass data from previous studies in 1993 and 2018.
Use Cases
Assessing metal contamination levels in marine ecosystems based on trace metal concentrations in water, sediment, and seagrass.
Identifying spatial patterns of pollution in the Torres Strait based on provided sampling location coordinates.
Investigating the potential impact of Fly River discharge on the region based on the project's stated aim.
Comparing current trace metal levels with historical baselines based on the supported historical seagrass data.
Strengths
Includes data from four distinct environmental matrices: water, benthic sediment, suspended sediment, and seagrass.
Supported by historical seagrass data from two previous studies (1993 and 2018), enabling temporal comparison.
Provides detailed methodological references to a full NESP project report for sample collection and analysis.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Description metadata is limited; actual data quality requires manual inspection after download.
Provenance
Source
National Environmental Science Programme (NESP) TWQ 5.14 project, conducted by CSIRO and James Cook University (JCU).
Collection Method
Water samples filtered and analyzed by ICP-MS; sediment samples digested with microwave-assisted acid dissolution and analyzed by ICP-MS; seagrass samples rinsed, weighed, and analyzed for trace metals.
Time Range
2019 to 2020, with supporting historical data from 1993 and 2018.
Freshness
Last updated 2026-07-13 18:19:09.540995; freshness should be verified.
Geography
Torres Strait, with specific sampling around Boigu and Saibai islands.
Some background knowledge of environmental chemistry and water quality management in Australia is needed to properly interpret this data.
