Description
United Kingdom digital vector boundaries for Travel to Work Areas (TTWAs) as defined in December 2011. The dataset provides five boundary variants, including full-resolution, generalised, and ultra-generalised versions, clipped to the coastline or extending to the realm's extent. It contains intellectual property rights from both the Ordnance Survey and the Office for National Statistics.
Use Cases
Mapping commuting zones based on official 2011 TTWA definitions.
Spatial analysis of labor markets using the generalised (20m) boundaries for faster processing.
Integrating TTWA boundaries with census data for socio-economic research.
Visualising regional economic connectivity in web maps using the ultra generalised (500m) boundaries.
Strengths
Provides five distinct boundary resolutions, from full (64-68 MB) to ultra generalised (382 KB), catering to different use cases.
Contains direct intellectual property attribution to Ordnance Survey and the Office for National Statistics.
Cross-platform presence on uk_data indicates established importance and official status.
Limitations
Metadata completeness is low: specific column names, row counts, and author details are unknown.
The dataset is based on a 2011 definition, which may not reflect current commuting patterns.
The 'last updated' metadata field (2026-07-08) appears to be a future date or system timestamp, not a meaningful content update.
