UNEP-WCMC and IUCN, in collaboration with a global network of experts, identified over 8000 tree species threatened with extinction. This first-of-its-kind global assessment records information on individual species, including IUCN red list category, distribution, uses, ecology, threats, and conservation measures. The database is used to generate The World List of Threatened Trees.
Use Cases
- Assessing global extinction risk for tree species based on IUCN red list categories.
- Mapping species distribution and identifying conservation priorities based on geographic information.
- Analyzing threats to tree biodiversity based on recorded threat data.
- Planning conservation measures based on documented conservation actions.
- Studying tree ecology and uses based on recorded ecological and use data.
Strengths
- Covers over 8000 tree species, providing a broad taxonomic scope.
- Compiled by UNEP-WCMC and IUCN with input from a global network of experts and regional workshops.
- Includes multiple data facets per species: IUCN status, distribution, uses, ecology, threats, and conservation.
Limitations
- Row count and specific column definitions are unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
- Last update date is unknown; freshness unverified.
- Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
