Description
This geospatial dataset provides OpenStreetMap features for waterways, wetlands, and bays across Turkey, exported by the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team. It includes 13 attribute fields covering physical dimensions, infrastructure types like tunnels, and localized naming in Turkish and English. The data reflects the state of the OpenStreetMap database as of March 2026.
Use Cases
Hydrological flow analysis using width and depth attributes to characterize river segments
Navigation and routing optimization by identifying tunnel, covered, and blockage status of waterways
Toponymic research using the name:tr and name:en fields to compare local and international naming conventions
Strengths
Provides 13 distinct attribute tags including infrastructure details like tunnel and blockage
Supports interoperability via SHP, GEOJSON, GEOPACKAGE, and KML formats
Includes localized name:tr and international name:en labels for major water bodies
Limitations
Attribute density is inconsistent as fields like width and depth rely on manual volunteer entry
Geographic coverage may be biased toward urban or high-interest areas mapped by the OSM community
Provenance
Source
OpenStreetMap
Collection Method
Crowdsourced via OpenStreetMap contributors and exported by the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT)
