Four concordant zircon reference materials spanning Miocene to Archean ages (9.52 Ma, 337.15 Ma, 1066.3 Ma, 2674.3 Ma) were analyzed. This contribution reports on sample preparation and Laser Ablation Microprobe ICP-MS analytical techniques used at Memorial University's INCO Innovation Centre. Final U-Pb age calculations for the reference materials show excellent agreement with known ID TIMS ages.
Use Cases
- Validate the reproducibility and accuracy of LAM ICP-MS techniques based on concordant zircon reference materials.
- Benchmark laboratory protocols for U-Pb isotopic age dating based on described sample preparation methods.
- Assess the applicability of LAM ICP-MS for dating young zircon populations based on the Miocene sample GP-09-02.
- Compare analytical results against known ID TIMS ages for quality control.
Strengths
- Includes results for four zircon reference materials with specific ages: 9.52 Ma, 337.15 Ma, 1066.3 Ma, and 2674.3 Ma.
- Demonstrates excellent agreement with known ID TIMS ages, indicating reproducibility, accuracy, and precision.
- Describes a specific, routinely used analytical technique (LAM ICP-MS) and sample preparation methodology.
Limitations
- Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
- Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
- Data may reflect methodological bias inherent to the specific laboratory techniques described.
