Description
24 UK biodiversity indicators were published by JNCC on behalf of Defra, with the latest publication on 19 January 2016. This indicator, D1b, provides estimates of annual greenhouse gas removals by UK forests from 1990 to 2013, derived from the UK's Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry greenhouse gas inventory. The data quantifies the carbon sequestration ecosystem service provided by forests, including removals of carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide expressed in carbon dioxide equivalent.
Use Cases
Modeling the contribution of UK forests to national carbon budgets based on greenhouse gas removal estimates.
Analyzing trends in carbon sequestration by woodland type (e.g., broadleaf vs. conifer) for biodiversity and habitat management.
Assessing the climate change mitigation value of forest ecosystems as a regulating service.
Validating or informing updates to the UK's Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry greenhouse gas inventory.
Strengths
Data is part of an official UK government indicator suite published by JNCC on behalf of Defra.
Covers a 24-year time series from 1990 to 2013 for tracking long-term trends.
Estimates greenhouse gas removals for three key gases: carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide.
Limitations
The latest data point is for 2013, and the description notes the inventory methodology was under review in 2016, potentially limiting current relevance.
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment for large-scale modeling.
Provenance
Source
Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) on behalf of the UK Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra).
Collection Method
Derived from the UK's Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF) greenhouse gas inventory.
Time Range
1990 to 2013
