Description
The Gulf of Mexico is the geographic scope for this dataset of raw underway data collected aboard NOAA Ship Oregon II from 2017-04-28 to 2017 05-30. It contains meteorological, navigational, optical, physical, profile, and time series data logged by the ship's Scientific Computer System (SCS). NOAA's Office of Marine and Aviation Operations (OMAO) personnel submitted the data and associated metadata to the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) via the NOAA Rolling Deck to Repository (R2R) program.
Use Cases
Modeling sea surface conditions based on underway meteorological and physical data.
Analyzing ship navigation patterns and operational efficiency based on logged navigational data.
Correlating optical measurements with physical oceanographic profiles for water quality studies.
Creating time series analyses of environmental variables during the month-long cruise.
Strengths
Data spans a continuous 33-day period from April 28 to May 30, 2017.
Includes multiple data types (meteorological, navigational, optical, physical, profile, time series) from a single, coordinated cruise.
Contains supplementary cruise-level metadata from the Ship Daily Activity Log (SDAL).
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
