Description
United States precipitation and temperature records, corrected for station changes. The data includes raw, time-of-observation-adjusted, and homogenized sets for maximum, minimum, and average temperature and precipitation. This superseded version was produced by NOAA NCEI and last updated in January 2013.
Use Cases
Reproducing historical climate studies based on the superseded USHCN Version 2 data
Analyzing temperature trends based on the Pairwise Homogenization Algorithm (PHA) adjusted data
Studying precipitation patterns based on time-of-observation bias (TOB) corrected records
Comparing raw station data with adjusted versions to understand correction methodologies
Strengths
Data is corrected for changes in station location, instrumentation, and observing practices
Includes three distinct data types: raw, TOB-adjusted, and PHA-homogenized temperature and precipitation
Stations were selected for coverage, record length, completeness, and historical stability
Limitations
This version is superseded; the description advises against use except for reproducing old studies
Last updated 2013-01-10 00:00:00; freshness should be verified
