Description
The Australian Ocean Data Network provides data on inherent optical properties (IOPs) from a study in the Fitzroy Estuary and Keppel Bay system in tropical Australia. The dataset includes continuous spectral absorption, scattering, and backscattering coefficients, plus discrete measurements of phytoplankton, nonalgal particles, and colored dissolved organic matter absorption, along with pigment and suspended matter concentrations. Data were collected spatially and across tidal phases during the dry season, with the last update recorded on 2026-04-16.
Use Cases
Develop spatially and temporally adjusted remote sensing algorithms based on spectral absorption and scattering coefficients.
Model biogeochemical dynamics in coastal systems using data on phytoplankton pigments and suspended matter concentrations.
Investigate the impact of semidiurnal tides on water optical properties across an estuary-coast-ocean continuum.
Analyze variability in specific inherent optical properties (IOPs normalized by constituent concentration) for environmental monitoring.
Strengths
Includes continuous spectral measurements of absorption, scattering, and backscattering coefficients.
Captures data across strong spatial gradients, with particle scattering decreasing by 2 orders of magnitude from estuary to bay.
Sampling accounts for tidal phase variability during the dry season, addressing short temporal scales.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Data may reflect geographic and temporal bias inherent to the single dry-season study in tropical Australia.
