Description
Biennial land tenure and use data, plus annual land cover data, describe every cadastral parcel across the entire state of Victoria from 2006 to 2015. The Victorian Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport, and Resources created this dataset using a method designed for regular and consistent updates over time. It separately maps land ownership, land purpose, and the physical surface characteristics for detailed spatial analysis.
Use Cases
Modeling land use change over time based on biennial land use and tenure updates.
Analyzing agricultural activity and irrigation patterns where data is available.
Assessing environmental impacts by correlating land cover changes with other spatial datasets.
Informing policy and planning decisions with parcel-level data on ownership and land purpose.
Strengths
Covers the entire landmass of Victoria, providing state-wide completeness.
Provides a temporal series from 2006 to 2015 with regular update cycles.
Separates three distinct land concepts (tenure, use, cover) at the cadastral parcel level.
Limitations
Irrigation activity data was not available for 2006-07 and had incomplete coverage in 2012-13.
Land cover classification accuracy varies between classes; overall accuracy may be misleading for specific uses.
The methodology is described as being refined, and the dataset is subject to future improvements.
