Description
VLUIS separately describes land tenure, land use, and land cover for every cadastral parcel across the entire state of Victoria. The dataset, created by the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport, and Resources, provides biennial data for tenure and use and annual data for cover from 2006 to 2015. Its methodology is designed to produce regular and consistent information over time, differing from traditional land use mapping approaches.
Use Cases
Analyze changes in agricultural land use over time based on the biennial land use component.
Model environmental impacts by correlating land cover types with physical surface features.
Assess land ownership patterns for policy and economic development using the land tenure data.
Integrate parcel-level spatial data with other datasets for regional planning and resource management.
Strengths
Covers the entire landmass of Victoria, providing state-wide consistency.
Provides separate, regular data for three key land components (tenure, use, cover) over a 10-year period.
Data is available in multiple spatial and tabular formats, including SHP, GDB, and TAB.
Limitations
Land cover classification accuracy may not be representative in the north-west of the state due to a paucity of ground truth data.
The methodology is still being refined, and the dataset is subject to improvements in later versions.
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
