Description
The Western Australian continental margin was surveyed between 25 October 2008 and 19 January 2009 aboard the R.V. Sonne. Geoscience Australia collected 44 video transects and 6,229 still photographs from water depths between 831 and 4,827 meters. The data was gathered to support the Offshore Energy Security Program, focusing on geological, geophysical, oceanographic, and biological information.
Use Cases
Classifying deep-sea benthic habitats based on video transects and still photographs.
Analyzing seafloor geological features and composition from imagery collected at depths up to 4,827 meters.
Training computer vision models for automated detection of marine fauna and geological structures in underwater imagery.
Conducting baseline environmental studies for offshore energy development using the multidisciplinary survey data.
Strengths
Contains 44 distinct video transects providing continuous seafloor observations.
Includes 6,229 associated still photographs for detailed frame-by-frame analysis.
Covers a significant depth gradient from 831 to 4,827 meters, capturing diverse deep-sea zones.
Data collection was part of a coordinated multidisciplinary survey with defined scientific aims.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Data may reflect temporal bias from the 2008-2009 collection period.
