Description
NOAA-20 VIIRS satellite data provides the geometric parameter for the Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) model for band M1 (0.412 μm) at a 30 arc-second (1,000 meter) resolution. This daily product synthesizes 16 days of observations, temporally weighted to the ninth day, into a global Climate Modeling Grid (CMG). It is one of 39 separate files containing isotropic, volumetric, and geometric parameters for multiple spectral bands, used to derive surface albedo and anisotropy.
Use Cases
Deriving surface albedo values for VIIRS band M1 based on the geometric BRDF parameter.
Inputting BRDF model parameters into global climate simulation models using the Climate Modeling Grid.
Analyzing land surface anisotropy and reflectance changes over time using daily, temporally-weighted data.
Comparing BRDF parameters across multiple VIIRS spectral bands (M1-M9, visible, NIR, shortwave, and DNB).
Strengths
Provides a specific geometric parameter for the 0.412 μm wavelength (VIIRS band M1) at a consistent 1,000-meter resolution.
Offers daily global coverage synthesized from 16 days of data, enhancing temporal consistency.
Part of a standardized product suite (VJ143D) with documented improvements in calibration and geolocation from the V002 algorithm version.
Limitations
Column names and exact file sizes are not provided in any source metadata.
Known issues with the data are referenced but not described directly, requiring consultation of an external website.
Each large file contains only one data layer, which may complicate multi-band analysis workflows.
