March/April 2012 marine survey GA0334 collected multibeam echosounder data used to manually digitize reef polygons. Reef areas were defined as exposed, hard substrate raised above the surrounding seafloor, mapped at a scale of 1:10,000 using bathymetry, backscatter, and derivatives. This dataset is published with the permission of the CEO, Geoscience Australia.
Use Cases
- Map reef habitat distribution based on exposed hard substrate polygons.
- Analyze seafloor morphology based on bathymetry and backscatter data.
- Model marine ecosystems based on identified reef structures.
Strengths
- Features were mapped at a detailed scale of 1:10,000.
- Data derived from a dedicated marine survey (GA0334) in March/April 2012.
- Based on multiple data sources including bathymetry, backscatter, slope, hillshading, and contours.
Limitations
- Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
- Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
- Data may reflect geographic and temporal bias inherent to the single 2012 survey.
