Description
The Canadian Environmental Sustainability Indicators program provides a national summary of annual water quantity status in rivers across Canada from 2009 to 2023. It also offers trends assessing significant changes in water quantity, including very-high and very-low flows, at monitoring stations over a 50-year period from 1974 to 2023. Data is provided by Environment and Climate Change Canada in formats including CSV, GeoJSON, and interactive maps.
Use Cases
Assessing annual water quantity status for Canadian rivers based on national summary data from 2009-2023.
Analyzing long-term trends in very-high and very-low river flows based on 50-year monitoring station data.
Mapping spatial patterns of water quantity across Canada using the provided geospatial data formats.
Modeling hydrological changes and climate impacts using the indicator's calculated metrics and station-level data.
Strengths
Includes a 50-year trend analysis period from 1974 to 2023.
Provides data at both national summary and individual monitoring station levels.
Offers multiple access formats including CSV, GeoJSON, and interactive visualizations.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Data may reflect geographic or temporal bias inherent to the monitoring station network.
