Description
NOAA_NCEI provides water temperature and derived turbulence quantities measured by chipod thermistor chains on a PIRATA mooring at 0N,10W in the Tropical Atlantic. The dataset spans from September 23, 2005, to December 31, 2017, with measurements taken at six specific depths. Data are stored in NetCDF format.
Use Cases
Analyzing temporal trends in water temperature at 21, 30, 35, 50, 65, and 81 meter depths.
Studying turbulence and mixing derived from spectral scaling of fast thermistor data.
Validating ocean model simulations of the tropical Atlantic using in-situ mooring observations.
Investigating interannual variability in ocean heat content from a long-term time series.
Strengths
Provides a 12+ year time series from 2005 to 2017, enabling analysis of long-term trends.
Includes derived turbulence quantities, offering processed metrics beyond raw temperature.
Data collected at six distinct depths (21m to 81m) allows for vertical profile analysis.
Limitations
The dataset contains gaps in the temporal record, as noted in the descriptions.
