Description
Global ocean temperature-depth profiles collected by the vessel CAVENDISH across the English Channel, Great Australian Bight, Indian Ocean, Mediterranean Sea, North Atlantic Ocean, South Pacific Ocean, and Tasman Sea. The dataset contains observations processed by the NODC into the standard C128 format, with measurements recorded at uniform 5-meter depth intervals up to approximately 285 meters. Data collection occurred between January 15, 1957, and October 5, 1960.
Use Cases
Analyzing the thermal structure of the upper ocean layers using paired temperature-depth values.
Studying spatial and temporal variability of sea surface temperature and subsurface heat content across multiple ocean basins.
Validating historical ocean climate models with in-situ temperature profile data from the late 1950s.
Investigating cruise-specific oceanographic conditions using reported cruise information, date, position, and time for each observation.
Strengths
Provides a multi-year time series from 1957 to 1960, capturing several annual cycles.
Covers a wide geographic scope across seven distinct ocean regions and seas.
Data is standardized to the NODC C128 format, ensuring consistent structure for analysis.
Limitations
Key metrics like row count, file size, and specific column names are unreported across all sources.
The mechanical bathythermograph (MBT) instrument limits observations to a maximum depth of approximately 285 meters, restricting analysis to the upper ocean.
Conflicting 'last updated' metadata exists between platforms (2026 vs. 1960), casting doubt on data currency and maintenance history.
