Description
August 26 to September 1, 1970, this dataset contains bathythermograph (XBT) temperature-depth profiles collected during the COURTNEY cruise in the North Atlantic Ocean. Data was processed by the National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC) into the standard C116 format, recording inflection points to define the temperature curve. The dataset is published by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Use Cases
Analyzing vertical ocean temperature structure using paired temperature-depth values.
Studying short-term thermal variability in a specific North Atlantic region from cruise data.
Calibrating or validating ocean models with historical in-situ profile measurements.
Researching expendable bathythermograph (XBT) instrument methodology and data formats.
Strengths
Data processed to a documented NODC standard format (C116/C118).
Provides precise temporal coverage for a one-week cruise in 1970.
Includes specific cruise, position, date, and time metadata for each observation.
Cross-platform presence on U.S. government data portals indicates curation and importance.
Limitations
Exact row count, column names, and file size are unknown from provided sources.
Data is historical, covering only a single week in 1970.
