Description
NOAA_NCEI provides bathythermograph (MBT) data from the CRANE expedition across the Arabian Sea, Bismarck Sea, Gulf of Aden, Japan Sea, North Pacific Ocean, Solomon Sea, South China Sea, and South Pacific Ocean. The dataset contains temperature-depth profile pairs recorded at uniform 5-meter intervals down to a maximum depth of approximately 285 meters. Data was collected between January 19, 1955, and December 14, 1958, and processed by NODC into the standard C128 format.
Use Cases
Analyzing the thermal structure of the upper ocean layer (down to ~285m) using paired temperature-depth values.
Studying spatial patterns of sea surface and subsurface temperatures across multiple Pacific and Asian seas.
Investigating historical ocean conditions and variability during the mid-1950s using cruise information, date, position, and time metadata.
Calibrating or validating ocean model hindcasts for the 1955-1958 period.
Strengths
Data is standardized into the NODC C128 format, ensuring a consistent structure for analysis.
Provides a multi-year time series (1955-1958) from a specific research vessel (CRANE) across a wide geographical area.
Temperature measurements are recorded at a uniform 5-meter depth interval, facilitating systematic profile comparisons.
Limitations
The mechanical bathythermograph (MBT) instrument limits observations to a maximum depth of approximately 285 meters, capturing only the upper ocean layer.
Key metadata such as exact row count, column names, and license information are unavailable from the provided sources.
The dataset's age (1955-1958) may limit its direct applicability to contemporary studies without consideration of historical measurement techniques.
