Description
Arctic Ocean net primary productivity (NPP) data was assembled from 1959 to 2011, combining historical databases and recent polar research cruises. Measurements include NPP, chlorophyll-a, nitrate, nitrite, mixed layer depth, sea surface temperature, and euphotic layer depth, collected between 65 and 89°N primarily from late spring to early fall. The dataset was sponsored by NASA's Primary Productivity Algorithm Round Robin (PPARR) program and curated by NOAA NCEI.
Use Cases
Modeling Arctic Ocean net primary productivity trends over a 52-year period using the NPP and time data.
Analyzing relationships between phytoplankton biomass (chlorophyll-a concentration) and nutrient availability (nitrate and nitrite concentrations).
Studying the physical drivers of productivity by correlating NPP with mixed layer depth (MLD) and sea surface temperature (SST).
Assessing seasonal productivity patterns using data collected mainly from late spring to early fall.
Validating satellite-derived ocean color algorithms with in-situ NPP and chlorophyll-a measurements.
Strengths
Covers a long temporal range of over 52 years (1959-2011).
Includes multiple co-located biogeochemical and physical parameters (NPP, Chl-a, nitrate, nitrite, MLD, SST).
Spatially focused on the high-latitude Arctic Ocean (65-89°N).
Sponsored by a major research program (NASA PPARR), indicating a standardized collection effort.
Limitations
Key metadata such as exact row count, column names, and file size are unknown across all sources.
Nitrate and nitrite concentration measurements are limited to the upper 100 meters of the water column.
There is a conflict in the 'last updated' date between platforms (2011-10-21 vs. 2026-03-05), creating uncertainty about recent modifications.
