Description
From February to September 2018, this dataset contains water temperature profiles collected via expendable bathythermograph (XBT) casts from multiple vessels. The data were gathered under the Ship of Opportunity High Density XBT Transects Program along specific transects (AX7, AX8, AX10, AX25, AX97, MX4) and submitted by Gustavo Goni of AOML to NOAA NCEI.
Use Cases
Modeling ocean heat content and thermal structure based on vertical temperature profiles.
Analyzing seasonal temperature variability in the Atlantic and Mediterranean based on the 2018 time range.
Validating satellite-derived sea surface temperature data with in-situ profile measurements.
Studying specific ocean transects (e.g., AX7, AX8) for regional circulation patterns.
Strengths
Data collected under a structured program (Ship of Opportunity High Density XBT Transects Program).
Covers a defined 7-month period from 2018-02-06 to 2018-09-19.
Geographic scope includes the Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea, and adjoining waters.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
