Description
From August 10-19, 2018, this dataset contains 142 CTD casts measuring water column properties from the vessel Norseman II in the Bering Strait and Southern Chukchi Sea. The data, recorded with an SBE911p system, include pressure, temperature, conductivity, salinity, oxygen, fluorescence, and turbidity. It supports the NSF Arctic Observing Network's long-term monitoring of the region's physical and biogeochemical state.
Use Cases
Analyzing vertical water column structure and stratification based on temperature and salinity profiles.
Investigating relationships between physical parameters (temperature, salinity) and biogeochemical indicators (oxygen, fluorescence, turbidity).
Calibrating or validating oceanographic mooring data from the same region and time period.
Studying short-term spatial variability across sections in the Bering Strait and Southern Chukchi Sea.
Strengths
Contains a specific, high count of 142 individual CTD casts, providing dense spatial coverage for the cruise duration.
Data collection used a calibrated, industry-standard SBE911p system with dual sensors for key parameters (temperature, conductivity, oxygen), suggesting quality control.
Explicitly linked to funded, long-term scientific programs (NSF Arctic Observing Network) and a cited synthesis publication, indicating research pedigree.
Limitations
Column names and precise data structure are not provided in the metadata, requiring inspection of the raw CNV files.
Conflicting 'last updated' dates between platforms (2018-08-19 vs. 2026-03-06) create uncertainty about post-processing or re-publication.
No water samples were collected, limiting the ability to ground-truth sensor measurements like fluorescence with discrete chlorophyll or nutrient analyses.
Provenance
Source
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Department of Commerce; funded by NSF Arctic Observing Network grants PLR-1304052 and PLR-1758565.
Collection Method
In-situ measurements collected via ship-based Conductivity-Temperature-Depth (CTD) profiler during a dedicated research cruise.
Time Range
2018-08-10 to 2018-08-19
Freshness
2026-03-06 00:20:57.724641
Geography
Bering Strait and Southern Chukchi Sea, sailing from and to Nome, Alaska, USA.
Data are in proprietary CNV format (Sea-Bird Electronics), which may require specific software or libraries to read. A separate archive exists for mooring data serviced during the same cruise.
