Description
8500124 contains wave spectra and meteorological data collected from NOAA Ship FERREL and other platforms in the Chesapeake Bay from March 14 to November 22, 1983. The data has been processed to the NODC F191 format, which includes seven record types for buoy identification, meteorological parameters, and wave time-series details. Each record is 120 characters long, sorted by station and record type.
Use Cases
Analyzing wave frequency and density time series based on reported wave spectra records.
Studying meteorological conditions like temperature and pressure from buoy-identified parameters.
Modeling coastal processes in the Chesapeake Bay using historical wave and weather data.
Validating oceanographic models against standardized NODC F191 format data.
Strengths
Data covers a specific 8-month period in 1983 with precise start and end dates.
Data is structured according to a documented standard format (NODC F191).
Cross-platform presence on Data.gov and NASA EarthData suggests established provenance.
Limitations
Metadata completeness is low: column names, row counts, and file size are unknown.
The data is noted to not completely conform to the F191 format, indicating potential quality issues.
Data is historical (1983) and may not reflect current conditions.
