Phanerozoic rocks in onshore Western Australia are primarily sedimentary, with volcanic and intrusive rocks limited to areas related to continental breakup. Mineralisation is primarily strata-bound, including Mississippi Valley-type base metals in Ordovician to Carboniferous rocks, coal in the Permian and Jurassic, and mineral sands in Cainozoic strandlines. This document from Geoscience Australia describes the geology and mineral resources of Western Australia's Phanerozoic basins, last updated in April 2026.
