Description
516 maps comprise the largest-scale topographic series covering the entire Australian continent. Each standard map sheet covers an area of approximately 1.5 degrees longitude by 1 degree latitude, showing natural and constructed features like infrastructure, vegetation, and 50-meter contours. Geoscience Australia provides this data in digital PDF format with coordinates in GDA94, GDA2020, and AHD datums.
Use Cases
Terrain analysis and elevation modeling based on 50-meter contour intervals.
Infrastructure and land-use planning based on depicted road, rail, and administrative boundaries.
Environmental and hydrological studies based on mapped vegetation and hydrography features.
Creating regional base maps for GIS projects based on standardized UTM projection and geographic coordinates.
Strengths
Covers the entire continent of Australia at a consistent 1:250,000 scale.
Comprises 516 individual map sheets, with approximately 50 covering non-standard areas for optimal land coverage.
Includes multiple coordinate datums (GDA94, GDA2020, AHD) and uses the Universal Traverse Mercator projection.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Data is provided in PDF format, which may require conversion for direct geospatial analysis.
