Description
3385 point-like or extended X-ray sources were detected in the first 5.5 square degrees surveyed by the XMM-Newton Large-Scale Structure project. The catalog, created by NASA HEASARC in February 2008, provides main parameters like position, count rate, and source extent with associated likelihood values. Additional data products, including X-ray images and optical thumbnails, are available from the Milan XMM-LSS database.
Use Cases
Analyzing the spatial distribution of X-ray sources based on cataloged positions.
Studying source properties and populations using count rates and source extent likelihoods.
Cross-matching X-ray sources with optical counterparts using provided astrometric corrections and external database links.
Validating detection algorithms by comparing with the reported excellent agreement with deep log N-log S.
Strengths
Contains 3385 detected sources above a defined likelihood threshold.
Covers a surveyed area of 5.5 square degrees.
Provides error estimates for position and count rate derived from simulations.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
